When a parent names a daughter Gail, they rarely expect that little girl will grow into something closer to a gale, a force strong enough to reshape an entire industry. That is exactly what happened. Gail Liniger, co-founder of RE/MAX and the steady hand behind one of real estate’s most enduring brands, passed away on August 27, 2026, at the age of 81.
Alongside her husband Dave, Gail built a company from a single Denver office in 1973 into a global network of nearly 145,000 agents across more than 120 countries and territories. She joined the fledgling operation as its first employee in 1971, was promoted to vice president within the year, rose to executive vice president in 1978 and president in 1979, and in 1991 took the reins as CEO, a post she held for close to three decades while leading RE/MAX’s expansion far beyond North America. She shaped the culture that still defines the brand: collaboration, productivity, gratitude and giving. Under her leadership, RE/MAX became the official real estate sponsor of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in 1992, a partnership that has raised extraordinary sums for children’s hospitals ever since. She and Dave went on to build The Wildlife Experience, a 100,000 square foot conservation and education center in Denver, and turned their own ranch into Sanctuary, an 18 hole golf club designed by Jim Engh. In 2020 the two were inducted together into RISMedia’s Newsmakers Hall of Fame, and they hold a place in the Colorado Business Hall of Fame as well. In 2023, after fifty years with the company, the RE/MAX Holdings board named her Vice Chair Emerita.
Numbers alone do not explain why this industry loved her. In October 1983, Gail survived a seaplane crash in Canada that killed the pilot and left her with a severe head injury, partial paralysis and a body full of shattered bones. She fell into a coma. Doctors told her she might never walk again. She left Craig Hospital in Denver the following March using a cane and support casts, and when she walked onto the stage at the 1984 RE/MAX convention in Orlando, the room rose to its feet. It kept rising every convention after that, for more than thirty years, because everyone in that room understood exactly what they were applauding: a woman who decided, against the odds and against the odds makers, that she was going to walk, and lead, and build.
I only met Gail a dozen times over the years, but that was enough. Her poise commanded respect the moment she entered a room. Her generosity was unmatched, and it was not reserved for the RE/MAX family alone. She treated those of us outside that red, white and blue balloon with the same warmth she gave her own agents and brokers, because to Gail the real estate industry was one family, and she loved every branch of it.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dave, to the entire Liniger family, to her friends, and to an industry that will feel the absence of her particular kind of ‘gale’ for a very long time.
